Supreme Court Authorizes March in Arab Town
by Right-Wing Activists
(Jerusalem,
Sept. 4) Israel’s Supreme
Court ordered Israel’s
police to make appropriate arrangements to allow right-wing activists to carry
out a march with Israeli flags in Umm el-Fahm, Israel’s
second-largest Arab town. Police originally refused to permit the march, citing
the danger of public disturbances.
The petitioners include figures such as Baruch Marzel
and Itamar ben-Gvir of Hebron, who are associated with the former movement of
Rabbi Meir Kahane who
advocated inducing Arabs in Israel
to emigrate.
Judge Chanan Melzer
of Israel’s Supreme Court
was cited by
INN News as saying that it required 13,000 policemen in Jerusalem to ensure security for last year’s
Gay Pride march, and that a similar effort was appropriate to enable right wing
activists to march in safety in Umm el-Fahm.
